Person to person on the Internet
Reiner D., Blanton K., Academic Press Prof., Inc., San Diego, CA, 1997. Type: Book (9780121042455)
Date Reviewed: Sep 1 1997

This well-written introduction to using the Internet to communicate with other people covers all of the popular methods of Internet communication as well as the side issues such as security and safety. It is intended for people with little or no computer experience, and it succeeds in providing a solid background on the social aspects of the Internet.

In chapter 1, the authors explain why the Internet is interesting and useful. This chapter covers topics such as keeping in touch with family, making new friends, sharing hobbies and interests, and improving one’s career. Chapter 2 describes in detail the basics of connecting with the Internet. In chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6, the authors carefully walk the reader through Internet Relay Chat (IRC), multiuser domains (MUDs), email, and newsgroups, respectively.

The rest of the book is about the issues surrounding the use of Internet communication. These issues include, but are not limited to, computer security, real-life meetings, pornography, and legal issues.

There is a real need for books that thoughtfully bring the computer world to those who are ambivalent, or even computer-phobic. This is one such book.
