Trust is foundational for all interactions. While one might suppose that digital interactions are inherently disadvantaged in creating trust, the authors demonstrate that this stereotype may not always be true. Communication professionals and technologists will find thought-provoking ideas in these chapters.

Part 1 introduces in two chapters the topics of trust, communication, and “digitalization” as a field of research. In particular, there is an introduction to the key factors in the process of trust and the ingredients in relational trust and distrust in both face-to-face and media communications.

Part 2’s 12 chapters consider trust in the following contexts: online journalism, news sources, corporate organizations, informational sources in a digitized world, sports in the context of doping, science, trust-enhancing work leadership, competencies in asynchronous digital communication, electronically mediated communication, information systems, insights into the role of language and words, and privacy.

The presentations, while research based, are presented as conceptual insights gleaned from observation and study. The book may be profitably read by advanced students lacking a specialized research background in a particular field. Performance and experiential interactions with a specific source over time enhance trust.

Each chapter begins with an abstract and ends with a list of references. Contact information for each of the approximately 25 authors is provided. However, there is no comprehensive index for the book. The topic of digital trust is significant, and this treatment is a worthwhile resource for scholars and practitioners.
